Strive for sustainability
Updated: Jan 20
“We have not inherited this earth from our forefathers; we have borrowed it from our children.”
What is "sustainability"?
Sustainability simply means - meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainable living is a simple concept whose objective is to reduce personal and societal environmental impact by taking steps to counteract environmental concerns.
A sustainable lifestyle is a road-map, an action plan towards a promising future where living conditions and resource-use satisfy human needs without undermining the “integrity, stability and beauty” of the environment.
Why is it relevant today?
Climate change, global warming and resource depletion are not tales of far off lands. In fact, they are the harsh realities of the world we live in today. The dire need to shift to more eco-friendly practices keeps growing as we continue to deplete our resources at a rate at which they cannot be replenished. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we turn to a more sustainable lifestyle and pledge to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment.
Simple steps towards a sustainable future
Sustainable living is all about minimizing our burden on the Earth to ensure a clean future. Though there are countless ways to do this, we’ve listed some of the most impactful ones below!
- Delete the meat - go vegan!
Veganism comes with a lot of benefits. It not only has a huge impact on slowing down global warming but also protects all forms of animals from exploitation and cruelty.
- Shop less, Shop smarter
Use only eco-friendly products from conscious companies that actively try to lower their environmental impact through ethical processes and sustainable products.
- Cut out single-use plastics
Single-use plastics are a curse on our planet. Try adopting alternatives like cloth carry bags, metal/bamboo straws, stainless steel water bottles etc.
- Practice the 3Rs
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle simply means minimizing wasteful consumption, reusing items more than once, and disposing of waste in a manner that it can be easily recycled and given a new life.
- Save Water and Energy
A few small changes to your daily routine to save water and energy like using a bathing bucket and turning off appliances when not in use will go a long way towards a sustainable future.
- Cycling is the future (or carpooling at least)
Cycling and carpooling minimizes the unnecessary burning of fossil fuels and reduces the release of toxic gases in the atmosphere.
